India’s First Hydrogen Train has officially begun its journey after Prime Minister Narendra Modi flagged it off in Haryana on Friday. The launch marks a historic milestone for Indian Railways and places India among a small group of countries operating hydrogen-powered trains.
India’s First Hydrogen Train Begins Service
The train will operate on the Jind–Sonipat route in Haryana. It is powered by hydrogen fuel cells that generate electricity through a chemical reaction between hydrogen and oxygen. The only direct emission is water vapour, making it a clean alternative to diesel-powered trains.
Developed using indigenous technology under the Make in India initiative, the project reflects India’s push toward cleaner and more sustainable transportation.
A Big Boost for Green Mobility
The hydrogen-powered train has two hydrogen-powered driving coaches and eight passenger coaches. It can carry around 2,600 passengers and is currently operating at about 75 km/h during its initial phase. Also, dedicated hydrogen production and refuelling facility has also been established in Jind to support operations.
Speaking at the launch, Prime Minister Modi said the project showcases India’s growing engineering capabilities and commitment to reducing carbon emissions through innovative technology.
Why This Launch Matters
Hydrogen-powered trains is an environmentally friendly solution for railway routes that are not fully electrified. They help reduce dependence on fossil fuels while supporting India’s long-term goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2070.
With this launch, India joins countries such as Germany and China that have introduced hydrogen-powered rail technology. Experts believe the project could pave the way for wider adoption of clean-energy trains across the country in the coming years.
Conclusion
The launch of India’s First Hydrogen Train is a landmark moment for Indian Railways. Beyond introducing a new train service, it represents a major step toward cleaner transport, technological innovation and a greener future for the country’s railway network.
