Mumbai: Mumbai rains continued to wreak havoc across the city on Monday. Relentless monsoon showers triggered severe flooding, transport disruptions, and a tragic building collapse in Mankhurd. Daily life came to a standstill. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a Red Alert, warning residents of extremely heavy rainfall over the next 24 hours.

Six Killed in Mankhurd Building Collapse During Mumbai Rains

One of the worst incidents linked to the Mumbai rains occurred in the Mankhurd area, where a three-storey chawl partially collapsed after hours of heavy rainfall. The accident claimed six lives, including five children, while another person sustained injuries.

Emergency teams from the Mumbai Fire Brigade, Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), police, and ambulance services launched a rescue operation immediately after the incident. Officials continued to clear debris to ensure no one remained trapped beneath the rubble.

IMD Issues Red Alert as Mumbai Rains Continue

The IMD has issued a Red Alert for Mumbai, Thane, and Raigad. It has warned of extremely heavy rainfall, strong winds, and possible flash floods. Authorities advised residents to avoid unnecessary travel and stay away from waterlogged roads and coastal areas until weather conditions improve.

Several parts of the city witnessed severe waterlogging, disrupting normal life and slowing traffic across key routes.

Mumbai Rains Disrupt Schools and Public Transport

The impact of the Mumbai rains was visible across the city as schools and colleges remained closed. Local train services reported delays on several routes, while heavy waterlogging caused slow-moving traffic on major roads.

Officials have also encouraged organisations to allow employees to work from home wherever possible to reduce congestion.

Rescue Teams on High Alert

Authorities deployed thousands of civic workers, disaster response personnel, and emergency teams across the city to tackle waterlogging, fallen trees, and other rain-related emergencies. Officials activated pumps in flood-prone areas, while rescue teams remain on standby for any fresh incidents.

Officials have appealed to residents to follow weather advisories and avoid venturing into low-lying areas during periods of intense rainfall.

Monsoon Challenge Continues

The latest spell of heavy Mumbai rain has once again highlighted city’s recurring monsoon challenges, including aging infrastructure, flooding, and the vulnerability of older residential buildings. With more rain forecast over the next 24 hours, authorities continue to monitor the situation closely while urging citizens to remain cautious.

As rescue operations continue and emergency teams stay on alert, Mumbai braces for another day of intense monsoon conditions, hoping the worst of the weather passes without further tragedy.
