Delhi-NCR Rape Cases: Supreme Court Takes Suo Motu Cognisance

The Supreme Court has taken suo motu cognisance of recent rape cases reported across Delhi-NCR. The court raised concerns over public safety and questioned whether authorities are doing enough to prevent sexual crimes in public spaces.

A bench of Justices JB Pardiwala and K Vinod Chandran took note of multiple recent cases. These include the alleged sexual assault of a minor on a sleeper bus and another case involving a minor in a Delhi park.

What Did The Supreme Court Say?

The Supreme Court said recent reports point to a serious failure in law enforcement and public administration. The bench said public spaces such as parks and buses cannot become high-risk areas because of poor lighting, weak surveillance or inadequate facilities.

The court also stressed that expressing sympathy is not enough. It said authorities must fix responsibility and ensure accountability for public safety.

Why Did The Supreme Court Take Action?

The court referred to an August case in which a minor was allegedly gang-raped on a sleeper bus travelling from Greater Noida towards Delhi. The accused allegedly took advantage of the bus setup and the absence of a functional CCTV system. Both accused were later arrested, according to reports.

The court also referred to a recent Delhi case involving a minor who was allegedly sexually assaulted in a park by men posing as policemen. Police arrested three accused in connection with the case.

Supreme Court Recalls 2012 Nirbhaya Case

During the hearing, the Supreme Court said the recent incidents drew painful parallels with the 2012 Nirbhaya case. The bench highlighted the need for stronger preventive measures and accountability.

The court’s intervention comes as concerns over safety in public spaces remain a major issue in Delhi-NCR. The proceedings will now examine the measures taken by authorities to prevent such crimes and protect vulnerable people.
