Assam Flood Situation Remains Critical
The flood situation in Assam continues to remain serious despite slight improvements in water levels across some districts. According to the latest official figures, the death toll has risen to 66, while more than 6.5 lakh people remain affected by the floods triggered by continuous monsoon rainfall. Several districts are still battling submerged villages, damaged roads, and disrupted transportation as rescue and relief operations continue.
Thousands of families have been forced to leave their homes after floodwaters entered residential areas. Relief camps have been set up by the state government to provide food, drinking water, medicines, and temporary shelter to displaced residents. Authorities have urged people living in vulnerable areas to stay alert and follow official advisories.
IMD Issues Fresh Rain Warning
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted more heavy rainfall across Assam and other northeastern states over the next few days. Officials fear that fresh showers could increase river levels again, especially in districts already affected by severe flooding.
The Brahmaputra River and several of its tributaries continue to flow above the danger mark at multiple locations. Local administrations are monitoring embankments round the clock to prevent further damage.
Rescue Operations Continue
Teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), Indian Army, and local authorities are carrying out rescue operations in the worst-affected districts. Boats are being used to evacuate stranded residents from flooded villages, while emergency medical teams are providing healthcare services at relief camps.
Officials said restoring road connectivity, electricity supply, and drinking water facilities remains a top priority. Essential supplies are being transported to remote villages cut off by floodwaters.
Centre Extends Support
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has reviewed the flood situation and assured the Assam government of full support from the Centre. A central team has also been deployed to assess the damage caused to roads, bridges, agricultural land, homes, and public infrastructure.
The assessment will help determine additional financial assistance and rehabilitation measures for affected families after the floodwaters recede.
Agriculture and Wildlife Face Heavy Losses
The floods have also caused widespread damage to agriculture, with thousands of hectares of cropland remaining underwater. Farmers fear significant crop losses due to prolonged waterlogging.
Parts of Kaziranga National Park have also been affected, forcing wildlife authorities to closely monitor the movement of animals and conduct rescue operations where necessary.
Situation Remains Under Watch
Although water levels have started receding in some districts, authorities say the situation remains serious. With more rainfall expected in the coming days, disaster management teams remain on high alert across the state. Residents have been advised to avoid unnecessary travel and stay updated through official weather and disaster management advisories.
