The Opposition protest against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar and the Election Commission intensified in Delhi on Wednesday. The Aam Aadmi Party joined the agitation over allegations of “vote chori” and concerns surrounding electoral-roll changes.
The latest demonstration took place outside the Delhi Chief Electoral Officer’s office at Kashmere Gate. AAP Delhi chief Saurabh Bhardwaj and other party leaders joined Congress, Left parties and other opposition groups.
The opposition has been demanding greater accountability from the Election Commission. It has also called for the resignation of CEC Gyanesh Kumar.
Opposition Protest Gains Momentum
The latest protest came a day after Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and several other opposition leaders were detained during a demonstration near the Election Commission headquarters.
On Tuesday, opposition MPs attempted to march from Parliament towards the EC office. Police barricades stopped the march. Rahul Gandhi and other Congress leaders then staged a sit-in near Akashvani Bhawan.
The opposition has alleged irregularities in the revision of electoral rolls. It has also accused the Election Commission of not addressing its concerns.
The Election Commission has rejected the allegations. Therefore, the claims of “vote chori” remain part of the political dispute and should not be treated as established facts.
AAP Joins the Demonstration
AAP’s participation has widened the opposition campaign in Delhi. Party national convenor Arvind Kejriwal has also criticised the electoral-roll revision, claiming that genuine voters could be affected.
The political confrontation continued throughout the day. Opposition leaders also moved towards Jantar Mantar for another demonstration.
Meanwhile, Rahul Gandhi said he was ready to face additional FIRs linked to the protests.
The continuing demonstrations have kept electoral-roll revision and the Election Commission at the centre of a growing political dispute.
Conclusion
The Opposition protest is likely to remain a major political issue in the coming days. Opposition parties are continuing to seek answers from the Election Commission and action against CEC Gyanesh Kumar.
