Priyanka Gandhi Claims Police Threw and Scratched Her During Delhi Protest
Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra has alleged that Delhi Police personnel mishandled her during the ongoing opposition protest over the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.
The allegation came during a tense protest in New Delhi on October 7, as opposition leaders continued their demonstrations against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. The INDIA bloc has been demanding his resignation over alleged irregularities in the voter-list revision process.
Priyanka Gandhi’s Allegation
During the protest, Priyanka Gandhi reportedly lay down on the road and objected to the police action. She alleged that police personnel threw her and scratched her while trying to remove protesters from the area.
Priyanka also questioned the manner in which women protesters were being handled. In an interview with NDTV, she argued that women cannot legally be detained after sunset and questioned the police action during the protest.
Rahul and Priyanka Detained
The protest followed the previous day’s confrontation between opposition MPs and Delhi Police. Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi had staged a long sit-in near Akashvani Bhawan after the opposition march towards the Election Commission was stopped.
On October 7, both leaders were again detained during the protest. Other opposition MPs were also taken into custody as police tried to clear the protest site.
FIR Over Akashvani Bhawan Entry
The political confrontation has also taken a legal turn. Delhi Police registered an FIR against Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi and others following a complaint alleging that they entered the Akashvani Bhawan premises without permission during Tuesday’s protest.
The opposition, meanwhile, continues to demand a meeting with the Election Commission and action over its allegations concerning the SIR process. The Election Commission and BJP have rejected the opposition’s allegations.
