600 Bangladeshi Nationals Identified in J&K, 150 Moved for Deportation
Srinagar: Jammu and Kashmir authorities have identified around 600 Bangladeshi nationals allegedly staying illegally in the Union Territory. The administration has now started the deportation process, with the first batch of 150 people moved out of the region.
150 Bangladeshis Flown to West Bengal
A special Indian Air Force aircraft flew 150 Bangladeshi nationals from Srinagar to Bagdogra in West Bengal on Monday. Officials said the group was handed over to Border Security Force (BSF) personnel after reaching Bagdogra.
The move is part of the process to send the individuals back to Bangladesh. Authorities have kept the identified people in a police-managed camp in Srinagar before their transfer.
Another batch of 150 Bangladeshi nationals is scheduled to be moved on October 7, officials said. The remaining people identified during the verification process are expected to be sent out in phases.
Survey Identified Around 600 People
The identification followed a survey conducted across the Kashmir Valley with the help of the Jammu and Kashmir Police. Officials said around 600 Bangladeshi nationals were found to be allegedly staying illegally in different parts of the region.
Authorities began further verification after discrepancies were noticed in documents presented by some workers. Officials said the nationality of those identified was subsequently verified before deportation action was started.
Centre Steps Up Illegal Immigration Checks
The action comes amid a wider Centre-led exercise to examine demographic changes linked to illegal immigration. The Union Home Ministry had formed a High-Level Committee on Demographic Change in May.
The committee has been tasked with studying demographic changes in border areas and examining their possible causes. The panel also visited Jammu in August as part of its work.
Meanwhile, authorities in Jammu and Kashmir are continuing verification efforts. Officials have indicated that more people could be identified during the ongoing checks.
The latest action marks a major step by J&K authorities against alleged illegal immigration and is expected to continue in the coming days.
