India’s women’s badminton campaign at the Asian Games 2026 came to an end after Japan secured a 3-1 victory in the quarterfinals on Tuesday. PV Sindhu, Unnati Hooda and Tanvi Sharma were beaten in the singles matches, while Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand produced India’s lone win.
Sindhu Starts Strong but Yamaguchi Hits Back
Two-time Olympic medallist PV Sindhu faced Japan’s world No. 3 Akane Yamaguchi in the opening singles match. Sindhu won a closely contested first game 23-21, but Yamaguchi responded strongly to take the next two games 21-18, 21-6.
Japan then moved 2-0 ahead when Tomoka Miyazaki defeated Unnati Hooda 21-16, 21-18.
Treesa-Gayatri Keep India Alive
India’s World Championships bronze-winning pair Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand brought the team back into contention. They defeated Yuki Fukushima and Mayu Matsumoto 21-17, 21-16, reducing Japan’s lead to 2-1.
However, Tanvi Sharma could not extend the contest. Former world champion Nozomi Okuhara defeated the Indian youngster 21-12, 21-10, sealing Japan’s 3-1 victory and a semifinal place.

The defeat ended India’s women’s badminton team campaign at the Asian Games 2026. Sindhu, Unnati and Tanvi could not convert their singles opportunities, while Treesa and Gayatri provided the team’s only victory against Japan.
