RBI Raises Repo Rate to 5.50% After Nearly 4 Years, EMIs May Rise

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has raised the repo rate by 25 basis points to 5.50%. This is the first rate hike since February 2023. The decision was announced on Wednesday, October 7, after the Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) meeting.

The move comes as inflation risks increase. Higher crude oil prices and global economic uncertainty have also added pressure on the Indian economy.

RBI Changes Its Policy Stance

The RBI’s six-member MPC approved the rate hike. The central bank has also changed its policy stance from neutral to calibrated tightening.

The change signals a stronger focus on controlling inflation. The RBI is now expected to remain cautious about further rate cuts. Future decisions will depend on inflation, economic growth and global market conditions.

Home Loan EMIs May Become Costlier

The repo rate influences the cost at which banks borrow money. When the repo rate rises, banks may also increase their lending rates.

As a result, people with floating-rate home loans, personal loans and vehicle loans could face higher borrowing costs. Banks may increase interest rates, which could push up monthly EMIs.

However, the impact will depend on the lender, loan type and existing interest rate. Borrowers should check with their banks before making any changes to their repayment plans.

RBI Raises Inflation Forecast

The RBI has raised its FY27 inflation forecast to 5.2%. Rising crude oil prices, food prices and global uncertainty remain key concerns for the central bank.

The RBI is also keeping a positive outlook on India’s economic growth. It has raised its FY27 GDP growth forecast from 6.7% to 7.1%.

What the Rate Hike Means for Borrowers

The latest decision marks a major shift in India’s monetary policy after more than three years without a repo-rate increase.

For borrowers, the key concern will be the impact on EMIs and loan costs. Meanwhile, investors and businesses will closely watch the RBI’s next policy decisions as the central bank balances economic growth with inflation control.
