Bittu Tabahi, a 20-year-old from Madhya Pradesh, has become an internet sensation after taking on a massive environmental challenge. He cleaned the heavily polluted Ajnar River in Biaora with his own efforts. His mission soon gained attention across India. Now, it has brought him an unexpected opportunity from an internationally known environmental organisation.
Bittu Tabahi Took On the Ajnar River
Bittu, whose real name is Surendra Singh Choudhary, started cleaning the Ajnar River after seeing its poor condition. The river was filled with garbage and other waste. Instead of waiting for someone else to act, he stepped in himself. He spent months removing waste from the river, while videos of his cleanup work were widely shared on social media. The footage showed him working through dirty water and removing large amounts of garbage.
His efforts earned praise from people online and attracted attention from Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav, who recognised his work. However, Bittu’s biggest challenge did not end after the cleanup. Reports later highlighted a frustrating problem. Even after Bittu worked hard to clean the river, people started dumping waste there again.
People Started Polluting the River Again
The development sparked disappointment among people who had followed Bittu’s journey. It also raised a bigger question about public responsibility. Cleaning a river once cannot solve the problem permanently. Waste dumping, plastic pollution and poor disposal practices can quickly undo months of hard work. Bittu’s experience showed how difficult it can be to protect a public water body without community support.
His story therefore became more than just a cleanup campaign. It became a reminder that protecting rivers requires continuous public participation. Dutch Environmentalist Boyan Slat Offers Him a Job
Bittu’s determination eventually caught international attention. Boyan Slat, the Dutch environmentalist and founder of The Ocean Cleanup, noticed his work. Slat later extended an invitation to Bittu to join the organisation. The offer came after his river-cleaning efforts gained widespread attention online and could give the young environmental volunteer a chance to take his passion to a much larger platform.
Bittu’s journey has now moved far beyond Biaora. What began as one young man cleaning a polluted river has become an inspiring environmental story. His message is simple but powerful: one person can start a change, but everyone must help keep it going. The Ajnar River may have become polluted again, but Bittu’s determination has reached far beyond the riverbank.
