Vikas Bharat Buildathon 2025 officially kicked off today, marking the beginning of one of India’s largest nationwide innovation challenges for students. Launched under the Develop India Mission of the Government of India, the program aims to inspire young minds to develop practical technology-driven solutions that can accelerate India’s journey towards becoming a developed nation by 2047. With a huge prize pool of ₹1 crore, Buildathon invites students from schools, colleges and universities across India to showcase their creativity, problem-solving skills and entrepreneurial spirit.
Empowering India’s youth for nation-building
The central objective of Buildathon is to engage the youth of the country in real-world problem-solving across various sectors such as education, healthcare, sustainability, rural development, urban infrastructure, governance and digital innovation. By providing a collaborative platform, this initiative seeks to empower students to think beyond academics and become active contributors to the country’s developmental goals.
Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, while inaugurating the Buildathon, said, “Develop India Buildathon 2025 is not just a competition – it is a movement to unleash the power of innovation among our youth. Their ideas will define the India of tomorrow.”
The minister also emphasized that the government’s vision of “Developed India” is dependent on technology, inclusivity and youth participation. Buildathon embodies this spirit by creating an environment where innovation is celebrated and rewarded, he said.
Participation and Registration Details
The registration window for Viksit Bharat Buildathon 2025 is open to all students enrolled in recognized educational institutions across India. Participants can register individually or form teams of up to five members. The competition is being conducted in three phases—Ideation, Prototype Development, and Final Presentation.
During the ideation phase, students are required to submit their problem statements and proposed solutions online through the official Buildathon portal. Shortlisted teams will then move on to the Prototype Development Stage, where they will be mentored by experts from industry and academia.
The final round, scheduled to take place in New Delhi in early 2026, will bring together the top 100 teams from across India. These teams will present their working prototypes before a panel of judges comprising innovators, entrepreneurs, government officials, and policymakers.
Focus Areas for Innovation
The Buildathon encourages projects under several key themes that align with India’s development priorities:
- Sustainable Development & Climate Action – Ideas promoting renewable energy, waste management, and green technology.
- Digital Governance & Smart Infrastructure – Solutions for citizen services, transportation, and urban management.
- Health & Well-being – Affordable health tech innovations and telemedicine solutions.
- Education & Skill Development – Tools for accessible learning, AI-based education platforms, and vocational training systems.
- Agriculture & Rural Transformation – Agri-tech innovations for improving productivity, soil management, and farmer income.
These focus areas ensure that participants’ innovations have a tangible societal impact and are in sync with India’s vision of inclusive growth.
Prize Pool and Recognition
The Buildathon has a total prize pool of ₹1 crore with cash prizes for winners at the national, regional and state levels. The top three national winners will receive ₹25 lakh, ₹15 lakh and ₹10 lakh respectively, while several special category awards will be presented for women-led teams, sustainability-driven projects and social innovation.
In addition to monetary awards, the winning teams will receive mentorship opportunities, incubation support, and access to government grants to help transform their prototypes into real-world startups. The Education Ministry has also announced that the extraordinary ideas from Buildathon can be integrated into key initiatives like Digital India, Smart Cities Mission and Atmanirbhar Bharat Abhiyan.
Industry and Institutional Collaboration
Leading academic and corporate institutions including IITs, NITs, AICTE and private sector innovation centers, have participated in this program. Tech giants like Microsoft, Infosys and Google India have expressed interest in mentoring promising teams and providing access to cloud and AI resources.
Universities have been encouraged to host local hackathon chapters to quickly identify high-potential innovators. AICTE Innovation Cell is overseeing the coordination and evaluation to ensure transparency and inclusivity at all stages of the event.
A platform for national change
Officials involved in the Buildathon emphasized that the event is more than a technology competition – it is a nation-building exercise. By encouraging interdisciplinary collaboration, Buildathon aims to promote values such as teamwork, innovation and social responsibility among students.
Dr. Anil Sahasrabudhe, Chairman of AICTE, stated, “When students innovate for real problems, they learn what true nation-building means. The Buildathon is where ideas meet impact.”
Encouraging Innovation in Smaller Towns
The initiative also focuses on reaching students in Tier-2 and Tier-3 cities to ensure equitable access to opportunities. Special workshops, online bootcamps, and mentorship programs are being organized to help students from smaller towns understand innovation methodologies and design thinking.
Government officials highlighted that such inclusivity will help identify untapped talent from across the country, making the innovation ecosystem more representative and diverse.

With participation expected from over 10 lakh students, Viksit Bharat Buildathon 2025 is shaping up to be one of India’s most ambitious student innovation challenges. The initiative underscores India’s commitment to harnessing youth talent for a self-reliant and technologically empowered future.
