PM Modi Unveils ₹5,100 Crore Infrastructure Projects in Arunachal Pradesh
The government’s determination to boost development in the northeastern region was demonstrated on September 22, 2025, when Prime Minister Narendra Modi officially opened some significant infrastructure projects in Arunachal Pradesh. The initiative which has a budget of over 5100 crores, includes sectors like energy, connectivity, healthcare and tourism in an effort to boost the state’s economic growth and strategic significance.
Hydropower Projects: Tato-I and Heo:-
One of the foundation stones of the development agenda is the launch of two major hydroelectric projects:
- Tato-I Project:- Situated in the Xi Yomi district, it is a joint venture between the 186 MW project in Arunachal Pradesh and the North East Electric Power Corporation Limited (NEEPCO). With an investment of 1,750 crores, it is estimated to generate about 802 million units of electricity annually, which contributes significantly to the energy needs of the region.
- HEO Hydroelectric Project:- Situated in Shi Yomi district, the 180 MW project is expected to further increase the state’s power generation capacity, which supports both local consumption and potential exports in neighboring areas.
These projects are important in addressing the energy demands of Arunachal Pradesh and its neighboring states, which promote sustainable development through clean energy sources.
Convention Centre in Tawang:
In Tawang, a state-of-the-art convention center was inaugurated, aimed at promoting tourism and facilitating cultural exchange. This feature is expected to host international conferences, cultural ceremonies and other important programs, which is in the position of Tawang as a major destination for both tourism and international diplomacy.
Additional infrastructure initiative
Beyond energy and tourism, many other projects have been started to improve the quality of life for the residents:
- Connectivity enhancement: infrastructure improvement to increase the road network, promote more accessible and economic integration to remote areas.
- Healthcare facilities: Upgrade to medical infrastructure, ensuring better healthcare services for the population.
- Fire safety measures: Implementation of advanced fire security systems to protect communities and properties.
- Women’s Hostel: Establish facilities to support working women, promote gender equality and empowerment.
These initiatives reflect a holistic approach to development, which addresses various aspects of the well-being of the community.
Strategic Significance: Arunachal Frontier Highway
A notable strategic development is the announcement of the Arunachal Frontier Highway, which is a 1,840 km project designed to increase connectivity in the state’s river valleys. This highway will not only improve civil access but will also increase the operating dynamics of the Indian Army along the Northeast border, which will strengthen national security. The project focuses on the government’s integration of the development of infrastructure with strategic defense ideas.
GST Reforms: GST 2.0 and ‘Bachhat Utsav’
In conjunction with the infrastructure projects, PM Modi called the next generation of Goods and Services Tax (GST) reforms (GST) reforms GST 2.0 during his visit. The new tax structure simplifies rates up to 5% and 18%, and aims to reduce the tax burden on most goods. The ‘GST Bathat Utsav‘ dubbed initiative is designed to provide relief to consumers and promote domestic trade. PM Modi emphasized the revival of the ‘Swadeshi’ (Swadeshi) movement, encouraging citizens to take pride in supporting locally produced goods.
Cultural and symbolic importance
Addressing a gathering at Indira Gandhi Park in Itanagar, PM Modi described Arunachal Pradesh as “The Rising Sun” and “cradle of patriotism”. He highlighted the rich cultural heritage of the state and the warmth of its people, drawing similarities between the saffron color of the national flag and the spirit of Arunachal Pradesh. The Prime Minister also mentioned that during the tenure of the NDA government, Union ministers have visited the Northeast more than 800 times, which reflects the administration’s commitment to the development of the region.
Conclusion
The inauguration of these infrastructure projects is an important step in the development journey of Arunachal Pradesh. By focusing on energy, connectivity, healthcare and cultural initiatives, the government aims to create a strong base for permanent development. Strategic emphasis on the development of infrastructure not only enhances the state’s economic prospects but also strengthens its role in national security and regional cooperation. Since these projects come out, they are expected to convert Arunachal Pradesh into a model of integrated development in the northeastern region.
